Exchange a Ten to Subtract: Review Connections Worksheet — Grade 2
Exchange a Ten to Subtract: Review Connections: Check that adding ten ones removes one ten. Compare a subtraction needing an exchange with one that does not, then ask for an addition check. If the model is incorrect, revisit Explore. If the model is sound but calculation is uncertain, use Practice. If both are secure, use Apply or Review. A short check alone does not establish mastery. Starts with 4 practice tasks. Answer guidance included. Print on Letter/A4 or save as PDF from the print window.

- What students will do
- Check that adding ten ones removes one ten. Compare a subtraction needing an exchange with one that does not, then ask for an addition check. If the model is incorrect, revisit Explore. If the model is sound but calculation is uncertain, use Practice. If both are secure, use Apply or Review. A short check alone does not establish mastery.
- Age and response support
- Accept a spoken explanation or labeled drawing when writing would hide the mathematical reasoning.
- Before assigning
- Read the worked model first. Use counters or a paper sketch if helpful. Keep the answer page for discussion after the task.

Teaching guide, sample answers and curriculum references
Before you begin
Represent a two-digit number as tens and ones and show ten ones exchanged for one ten without changing the value.
How to use this worksheet
- Begin with: Write the number shown as tens and ones, then as a numeral.
- Connect the response to: Solve 52 − 27. Show your exchange.
- Ask students to apply the idea: A learner renames 52 as 5 tens and 12 ones. Explain and fix the error.
A common mistake to discuss
After one ten becomes ten ones, the tens must decrease by one. Do not reverse the ones subtraction to avoid an exchange.
What to practice next
Revisit the unit goals. Use the criteria to identify a specific response to improve; this activity alone does not establish mastery.
