Learning goals

  • Reconstruct time order and identify focalized language.
  • Analyze motif and ambiguity using competing readings.
  • Write, critique and revise a structural literary argument.

Before you begin

Distinguish narrator from author, sequence from chronology and textual inference from invented perspective.

Age and grade do not measure readiness. Adjust reading or adult support to preserve the intended learning goal.

Follow the sequence

Teaching and response guide

  1. Begin with: Reconstruct the chronological order and explain how the narrated order differs.
  2. Connect the response to: Analyze “People changed their plans; it was sensible to leave a space in the timetable.” as possible free indirect discourse. Explain the textual basis and retain any uncertainty.
  3. Ask students to apply the idea: Write two or three analytical paragraphs connecting time order, focalization and motif to a defensible thesis. Address a competing reading.

Watch for: A critical lens must explain supplied details, not impose an unsupported diagnosis or author intention.

Check the answer criteria for each task. A supported explanation may have more than one acceptable response. These activities offer evidence to discuss; completing a sheet alone does not establish mastery.
