Addition Parts Within 20

Use the numbered activities in order. The complete practice sheet is an alternative to the first three focused activities and is not repeated in this pack.
Keep the answer folder separate from student copies. Partner A and B cards contain complementary information; give each learner only their own card.

Learning goals:
- Represent a total as two parts. Connect pictures, stories and addition equations.

Before you begin:
Count within the number range and recognize addition symbols.

Teaching steps:
1. Begin with: How many objects are there altogether?
2. Connect the response to: There are 2 birds. 3 more arrive. How many birds are there now?
3. Ask students to apply the idea: Draw two groups to show 3 + 2.

Watch for: Writing an answer without connecting the quantities to parts and whole.
