Short A Words Sentences and Stories

Use the numbered activities in order. The complete practice sheet is an alternative to the first three focused activities and is not repeated in this pack.
Keep the answer folder separate from student copies. Partner A and B cards contain complementary information; give each learner only their own card.

Learning goals:
- Blend and read short-a CVC words in a short connected text.

Before you begin:
Know the letter sounds c, a, t, r, n, p, m, h, d, s and v. Introduce the words a, the, on, to, in before reading.

Teaching steps:
1. Begin with: Blend these sounds and write the word: c - a - t.
2. Connect the response to: Read cat. How many letters are in it?
3. Ask students to apply the idea: Read the story. What did the cat sit on?

Watch for: Guessing from a picture instead of blending the letters.
