Read Retell and Explain

Use the numbered activities in order. The complete practice sheet is an alternative to the first three focused activities and is not repeated in this pack.
Keep the answer folder separate from student copies. Partner A and B cards contain complementary information; give each learner only their own card.

Learning goals:
- Identify key events and retell a short narrative with relevant details.

Before you begin:
Read the passage with suitable support or listen to an adult; distinguish the chosen mode.

Teaching steps:
1. Begin with: Who is the main character?
2. Connect the response to: Number the events from first to last.
3. Ask students to apply the idea: Describe one helpful or persistent action. Use a story detail.

Watch for: Retelling every detail without keeping the main sequence.

Activity order:

2. practice — read-retell-short-stories-practice
3. apply — read-retell-short-stories-apply

These activities provide evidence to discuss. Completion alone does not establish mastery.
Paper size and page numbers are preserved in each PDF. Use the matching Sheet ID when checking an answer key.
