Main Ideas and Supporting Details

Use the numbered activities in order. The complete practice sheet is an alternative to the first three focused activities and is not repeated in this pack.
Keep the answer folder separate from student copies. Partner A and B cards contain complementary information; give each learner only their own card.

Learning goals:
- Find a main idea and connect details to it.

Before you begin:
Understand the words and representations introduced in the Explore activity.

Teaching steps:
1. Begin with: What is the passage mostly about?
2. Connect the response to: State the main idea in one sentence.
3. Ask students to apply the idea: Explain how one detail supports the main idea.

Watch for: Choosing one interesting detail as the whole main idea.

Activity order:
1. learn — main-idea-supporting-details-learn
2. practice — main-idea-supporting-details-practice
3. apply — main-idea-supporting-details-apply
4. review — main-idea-supporting-details-review
5. check — main-idea-supporting-details-check

These activities provide evidence to discuss. Completion alone does not establish mastery.
Paper size and page numbers are preserved in each PDF. Use the matching Sheet ID when checking an answer key.
