Silence Still Takes Time

Use the numbered activities in order. The complete practice sheet is an alternative to the first three focused activities and is not repeated in this pack.
Keep the answer folder separate from student copies. Partner A and B cards contain complementary information; give each learner only their own card.

Learning goals:
- Count explicitly labeled sound and silence durations in a rhythm.

Before you begin:
Follow a steady four-beat count. Performance can be added with adult support, but is not required by the paper tasks.

Teaching steps:
1. Begin with: How many beats are in S S R S?
2. Connect the response to: Do S S S S and S R S R have the same total duration?
3. Ask students to apply the idea: Draw four beat boxes. Show sound on beats 1 and 4, silence on 2 and 3.

Watch for: Accepting an answer without checking whether it uses the material and satisfies the requested relationship or criteria.

Activity order:
1. learn — rhythm-rests-and-silent-beats-learn
2. practice — rhythm-rests-and-silent-beats-practice
3. apply — rhythm-rests-and-silent-beats-apply

These activities provide evidence to discuss. Completion alone does not establish mastery.
Paper size and page numbers are preserved in each PDF. Use the matching Sheet ID when checking an answer key.
